Best Backpacks for 3-6 Months in Southeast Asia

Have you ever dreamed of taking a backpacking trip through the beautiful, lush countries of Southeast Asia – riding down the Ha Giang Loop of Vietnam, scuba diving in Koh Tao of Thailand, or exploring the temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia? Maybe you’re in the process of planning that trip right now 😉 Here are some awesome backpacks from 40L to 60L that will be the perfect travel companion for you.

1. REI Co-Op Ruckpack 40L – $159

The REI Co-Op Ruckpack line is a staple at TGT. I traveled full-time for 2 years with the 60L Ruckpack and it is my favorite bag to this day. This 40L version has a full-zip main compartment giving you direct access to your belongings that’s also easy to pack. The multipurpose side straps secure hiking sticks (when used with the pole loops towards the bottom), provide extra security for objects in the side pockets, and compress your main compartment. They can also function as a stopper if you want to access the main compartment like a quick backpack. Zip up the back panel to conceal your straps when stowing. The bags also come with a rain cover.

The Ruckpack comes in two frame sizes to accommodate standard women and men torso lengths. Each bag also comes in two size ranges (XS-XL & 2XL-4XL) for various waist/hip sizes.

2. Osprey Fairview/Farpoint 40L – $185

The Osprey Farpoint and Fairview bags are a backpacker’s go to. They are a size down from the previously mentioned Transporter, but may be the option for you depending on your travel needs. Different from the Transporter, the Farpoint/Fairview bags are a full-zip style opening, allowing you access to an undivided main compartment.

The front exterior pockets are great for water bottles, umbrellas, and tripods, but what makes the Farpoint/Fairview special are the side panel and straps. Fasten the side straps to compress your main compartment, or to secure items such as jackets, blankets, sleeping bags, or bulkier items such as shoes to the front of the pack.

The Farpoint and Fairview are both excellent choices for backpacking trips of either 3-6 months, depending on the climate you are packing for. Depending on your packing style, the dimensions may not meet all carry-on size requirements. Be sure to check with your airline.

3. Eagle Creek Tour Travel Pack 40L- $249

Are you looking for a backpack that can double as a duffel, and has a roll top like a water bag? The Eagle Creek Tour Travel Pack is. your bag! This incredibly versatile backpack opens as a clamshell to the deep main compartment with plenty of packing space and compression straps. The opposite/top side is separated by the waterproof divider with mesh pockets, perfect for your scuba diving adventures. When closed, this top compartment can store dirty or wet items separately from the main compartment, and be accessed through the roll top opening. Roll down the opening, clasp shut, and move on to the next destination without fear of unwanted items getting mixed in your bag.

For a 5-6 month or longer trip, opt for the larger 55L option.

4. Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Duffel -$250

The Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Duffel is another crowd favorite. With it’s brightly colored shell and interior, Cotopaxi is loved as a fun, functional carry option. Don’t let its smooth, compact appearance foll you—with a 42 liter capacity, this bag will definitely meet your travel requirements. The interior dividers feature pockets for even more organization. The front pocket and water bottle pockets are also a nice touch to give your trip the efficiency it deserves. The corner straps for reinforce stability but build and doubles as loops for hanging gadgets or accessories.

While all Cotopaxi products are made from recycled materials, the Del Dia line features bags made from scrap material that would otherwise be tossed in a landfill. Rather than picking a colorway, take a look at the Del Dia options and choose a truly one-of-a-kind bag.

5. Osprey Sojourn Wheeled Travel Pack 45L & 60L

The Osprey Sojourn 2-in-1 Travel Pack is all about function and convenience. Whether you’re running to your gate at the airport or trekking up to your next temple stay, this backpack will be sure to help you maintain your energy so you can go farther. Similar to the Farpoint/Fairview line, the Sojourn line’s design also comes with Osprey’s signature dual compression straps and padded sides for added security and strength. Stow the straps with the zippered cover to convert to rolling luggage.

The 45 liter capacity should be plenty for a 3-4 month, warm climate trip.

If you are packing for a multi-climate or longer trip, opt for the larger 60L option.

5. Salkan The Backpacker 45+20L – $380

Last but certainly not least is The Backpacker by Salkan. This dual bag system includes a daypack that can be attached to the front of the mainpack with heavy duty clips for easy carry and convenience. The mainpack’s capacity can be expand to an incredible 55L, giving you ample space for all your travel needs. The main compartment of the mainpack can be accessed from the top as well as through it’s full-zip opening, and includes many features such as inner/outer pockets, water bottle sleeve, and padded laptop sleeve for ease and organization. The mainpack includes a full-coverage waterproof raincover allowing you to safely secure your bag and carry it using the side handle.

If you’re a light packer, getting ready for a shorter trip (3-4 months) in a warm climate, the 40-45L packs should provide plenty of space. For travelers heading out on a longer journey covering multiple climates, or you simply like the security of a large pack, the larger options on this list will definitely do the job.
